Toy Girls - Shelf Series 111: Fionna

    It’s incredibly huge the trend of Genderbend; so much it even has an official name, BTW. I don’t know why, but people really seem to like to change the sex of a fictional character. It’s either transforming a girl into a dude, or a man to a woman. Fun? Fetish? Don’t know, but it exists a lot here in dA, and in many other fanart websites. However, this day I want to talk about a case done in a Commercial Work, and not any TV Show, butone of the biggest landmarks of Cartoon Network. For this Friday:

    Fionna, from “Adventure Time”.

In the Third Season of “Adventure Time”, we got the episode “Fionna and Cake”. It was about the world of “Adventure Time”, but everyone had the opposite sex: instead of Finn and his dog Jake, we got Fionna and her cat Cake; instead of Princess Bubblegum, Prince Gumball; instead of Marceline, Marshall Lee; and, of course, instead of Ice King, we had an Ice Queen. In terms of the plot, the story was about Fiona putting up with the courtship of Prince Gumball, who was actually the Ice Queen setting a trap for Fionna.

However, the twist here was that everything was a fanfic made by Ice King himself, and was forcing Finn and Jake to listen to his story; whoa, that is cruel!

I admit, this was incredible clever. Even if I’m not a fan of Genderswapping, I don’t have any problem with it; even if I can’t find sexy a female character created from a male one. Therefore, I find OK that “Adventure Time” took the first step and changed the sex of its characters even before the fans could think of it. But I have to give credit to the episode, because, even if the main idea was only to change the sex, the new avatars of the characters are so unique from their counterparts, and there’s no problem to take them as separate characters.

However, what I can’t help but to love is the explanation behind it: being only a creepy story made up by a loonatic like the Ice King. It not only haves a very solid reason, but it fits with the personality of this villain. I even adored how in future episodes, the Ice King even tried to use some magic to turn his book real.

It’s not surprise that fans adored this concept, and they got even more material for fanarts and fanfics with these genderbended characters. I can’t blame them: it’s an experiment that turned out great.

Well, let’s talk about Fionna already.

My situation with her is complex. On one hand, I can’t totally separate her from Finn, and take her as a different character. However, it never convinced me the idea of giving a pretty sexualized female avatar to out protagonist. I mean, she didn’t only get a very short skirt, but also a big pair of boobs. Also, I can’t help but to notice a bigger use of romance in her stories. It doesn’t help either that she was like Ice King’s attempt of project his sick affection for Finn.

Still, I wanted to draw Fionna as a Toy Girl, in order to finally put “Adventure Time” in the Shelf Series.

Because she only has two black dots as eyes, I drew her here with orange pupils. I chose this color for how odd it would look, fitting with the tone of the show.

For the pose, I used the iconic cover of the First Season of “Game of Thrones” as inspiration. Therefore, you can see Fionna sad, while sitting resting her hands on her sword, but with her legs closed.

I’ll never get in the Genderbend trend, but still I want people to create more of it if they feel inspired by it. It’s a healthy trend in fanarts, and I can see the fun in it. Maybe I’ll make a couple of fanarts out of Toy Girls to follow another trend, because “Cuteness shall last”.

    OK, enough of this trend. Here we finish with The Shelf Series, and I’ll see you next Friday. However, what’s for next time? We’re going to Japan, guys, to relieve one of its fondest traditions: Robot Fights! And you don’t have to worry for the space. This time we’re getting the Junior Size. These robots are too little that even a kid can control it.
