Description

I apologize so much for not having uploaded this last June 5°. Haven’t I finished it yet? That wasn’t the reason: I had this, and future work of the Porcelain Series, already made and ready to publish. What happens is that these last days I was busy as much as helping my family, as with other Inspiration-Break Works; and also trying to finish that Pokémon Job. Maybe the drawing was ready, but I didn’t have the description. I find this pretty stupid because this has been one of the works, not only from Toy Girls, which I have been the most anxious to publish. However, because of that, I wanted the perfect description. It’s not only that I’m very satisfied with this Toy Girl, but I really love this character, and everything it represents. Therefore, I knew it deserved not only a good drawing, but also an amazing description. With all this said, I’m mickeyelric11, the Master of Cuteness, and this is another work for Toy Girls’ Porcelain Series.     Like with Anastasia, I’m going to have two introductions for this Toy Girl. This character totally deserves them, but I also want to talk about two themes related to it:

Even with my big hatred to Social Justice Warriors, and Extreme Left Wings Idiots, I’m Feminist. I of course consider women as human beings who deserve the same rights, I don’t condone any crime, injustice and/or discrimination targeted to any innocent female, and I give my support to anyone who truly helps in defending women and girls in any case of chauvinism or sex crimes. Also, I’m totally fine with media promoting the Sex Equality and condemns the discrimination and mistreatment of people for having a vagina.

HOWEVER, I said I’m all for “Feminism”, not “Radical Feminism”, or like we call it in my country, “Hembrismo”. I want a world where women are treated like human beings and can have the same chances, but I don’t support women committing crimes, being bullies, mistreating men for their sex, and grab the torch of Feminism as revenge. Feminism is like any ideology: even if its goal is good, it can easily be tainted and mutated by stupidity and anger. Also, I totally reprobate stupid women and girls thinking all men are evil or inferior, wanting privileges, or victimizing in their condition of female when they had to face the consequences of their actions.

Feminism looks for an equal world, not for vengeance. It’s to aid women in parole, invite people to think different, and bring criminals to Justice, not to reverse the Victim-Victimizer roles. Sexism Sadly, I seen feminism interpreted so wrong in media. Thinking it helps to reduce chauvinism, dissipate stereotypes and  promote equality between sexes, many fictional works have instead promote sexism against males, create new stereotypes, but this time making fun of men and boys, and subliminally, or even directly, saying girls are better than boys. Sorry, guys: this is not right. Equality means treating everyone the same, not considering some more equal than others. This has to be considered, especially, when you want to create a good role model for girls and women for what a “Strong Girl” is supposed to mean.

Even if there are amazing examples, sadly, I have seen over and over how many TV Shows have promoted assholes who love to bully, mock, and even torture, male characters as a good example of strong girl for females, only because it has a vagina. “You can’t get angry with this bully because is a little girl”, “You don’t want to have this abusive spouse beaten up because it’s a sexy mother”, “A girl teasing you means she loves you”, “A strong girl is only strong if she constantly mocks and hits the nearest boy”, “It’s OK for a girl to act like a brat, make tantrums, be hypocrite, and act like a complete jackass because she is a defenseless girl”. Oh, and also, normally these characters are normally immune to bad things: they don’t suffer slapstick, are punished for what they do, have to get dirty, because, you guessed it, they are “defenseless” girls.

I’m sick of all this bullshit, and I don’t want to see it promoted ever again. Like I have said, I’m feminist, but from the real ideology.

However, like I have said, thanks God, they are indeed so many good female characters, and also real examples of Strong Girls. Today, I’m going to talk about one of the best cases, but, before it:

From the Disney Company, we can easily spot one of its most famous and successful branches: The Disney Princesses.

Even if the Fairy Tale Animated Films aren’t the majority in the Disney Cannon, they have became into the most iconic, and, therefore, the female royal characters it features manage to become into an own franchise. I find the idea pretty good and harmless, but, precisely because of its fame, it has gained its hatred and controversy. If it’s not Anti-Semitic Accusations or criticizing its monopoly business attitude, one of the biggest reasons to spit insults to Disney is about its concept of Princesses.

The people behind this normally complain for the characters leading this brand: they don’t have a good personality, they are bad role models, they question their actions in the movies, they promote unhealthy beauty standards, they all need a man to save the day, and “Please, somebody can think of the little girls”. Without any Vaseline, I consider this a lot of bullshit. Not all the Disney Princesses are Evangelion characters (Snow White and Aurora), not all are heroes with cape and sword (Cinderella and Aurora again), they aren’t all strong physically (Anna, Ariel, Snow White and…Aurora), and even not all of them are brave (Aurora again, man, she sucks), but, in my humble opinion, there’s nothing wrong with any of them. They aren’t supposed to be Mary Sues, like any character of fiction, they are supposed to have flaws to fix, limits to overcome, mistakes to make, personalities to develop, etc. We can’t forget that the early examples were limited to the Time their movies were made, and since Ariel, we get so great examples of Disney Princesses: Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Moana, Rapunzel, Anna and Els…oh yeah, I forgot: they got their own brand for how good their movie was…SEE?!

Haters gonna hate, even if the “Disney Princess Brand” is only for earn more money, the idea is good, and it had developed into a more feminist and encouraging concept for the female audience, and even very warm for the other publics; the little girls aren’t the ones making all that Rule 34 of “Frozen”.

However, forgetting all the controversy here, now a question for the fans: who is the best Disney Princess? Many are going to think of the very complex and likeable Belle, many Disney Renaissance lover will propose Ariel or Jasmine, the vintage people will pick one from the Golden or Silver Era, and there will be the people who will flip the bird to brands and go with Anna, Elsa, or the other Disney Princesses who didn’t manage to get in this branch. I’m going to say right now that YOU ALL ARE WRONG! Fuck, personal opinions and critics, this girl is the Best Disney Princess Ever. For this June 8°:

    Fa Mulan, from “Mulan”.

“Mulan” is without any doubt one of my favorite Disney Films Ever. Aside of being one of the most beloved movies from the Disney Renaissance, it even managed to turn its female protagonist into a Disney Princess. I have watched this movi over and over, but I still love it until this day.

When the Huns, lead by the merciless Shan Yu, start a great invasion in Imperial China, the man of every family is ordered to be recruited to aid the army against the attack. One of them being the famous veteran Fa Zhou who, even if he is already too old and weak to return to the battlefield, he still stupidly accept to join the army. Everyone tell him that this is a suicide mission, but he only cares to bring honor to his country and fulfill his destiny; ah, Asians! However, Mulan, her daughter which has just failed a Bride Test, decides, in order to save her father and bring honor to her family, steals her dad’s armor, sword and Recruitment Order, and disguises herself as a soldier named Ping in order to replace him in the army. Because his family can’t go for her without she gaining the capital punishment, it’s in the hand of the Spirits of the Family to send a guardian to get back Mulan: the Great Stone Dragon. However, Mushu, a degraded former guardian, accidentally destroys the statue, and so, in order to make up for his mistake, and also to get a promotion, decided to go instead of the broken beast, not to bring Mulan back home safe, but to help her to become into a great warrior and return as a hero.

Based on the Hua Mulan Chinese Legend, the film achieves its first succes because of a pretty unique story for the Disney Cannon: it’s not a classic Fairy Tale, a love story, or a normal person going into a magical world. Instead, we get literally a war film, but more focused in the value of family, an analysis about when we must follow the rules, and when we should break them, in order to do the best, and which is the right way to make your loved ones proud.

Because it’s Disney, of course this isn’t any “Call of Duty”, but, ironically, it breaks many standards. First, even if it’s a Family Picture, there’s a lot of violence in the film: death, corpses on the background, cruel murders, implied death of children, capital punishment, beheading mentioning, and even he have a protagonist who kills. Also, even if I personally don’t believe it, there’s even fanservices…IN A DISNEY FILM. Yeah, maybe it wasn’t the first Disney Work, or not even the first Disney Film to do it, but we have many Sex Jokes in the flick that you normally find in an anime: the protagonist is covered-naked twice, she is in two bath scenes, one of them with men, there’s two boob jokes, and even another one with her nether regions, we have characters dressing as the opposite sex, and the film even pronounces the word “trasvesti”, etc. Also, even the end of the Second Act has to do with the boobs of the protagonist. Yeah, A FAAAAAAAMILY PICTURE! But still, all this makes the film stronger: it gives enough violence and sex to make the story more mature and serious, it touches a lot of deep and sentimental scenes.

However, the strongest points of this film are two: the songs, and the characters. Because it was done in the Disney Renaissance, the movie had to be a musical, but still the songs were pretty catchy and memorable: the action-packed “I’ll Make a Man Out of You”, the funny, and then heartbreaking, “A Woman Worth Fighting For”, the OK “Bring Honor to Us All”, and the sentimental and teary “Reflection”.

The film has its weaknesses, like a very one-note villain, not dipping enough in the Chinese Culture, and having a sometimes annoying comic relief, Mushu. But still, this film is strong enough to keep itself in the memory of the public, and as one of the best films from Disney.

Therefore, let’s finally touch the protagonist: Mulan.

Being the only daughter, and child, of her family, in Ancient Chine, Mulan only have a duty: be a great wife. However, after screwing up with her session with the Bride Training, she thinks she will never be worth anything; ah, Chauvinism! So, after hearing her father must participate in the war, she begs him not to do it; but he is too stubborn, and stupid, to listen to her. Therefore, seeing no other option, she decides to join the army dressed as a man, with the aid of the little dragon Mushu.

However, she soon realizes that join the Army is as hard as…joining the army: she is too weak for combat, too unskilled for weapons, and too inexperienced in anything war-related; and it doesn’t help she earned the hatred of all the other recruits because of Mushu’s bullshit advices. However, instead of quitting, she decides to put more effort, and brain, and she then advances in the Army Training, becoming into one of the best soldiers, and earning the friendship of the recruits Chien-Po, Ling and Yao.

One of the most iconic aspects of Mulan is not really from the movie, but outside of it: even if she doesn’t come from royalty, marries a prince or something similar, or has an important charge of leading, Mulan belongs to the Disney Princesses Brand. Maybe this looked very forced and just as a pathetic way to earn more money from this movie. However, it actually has a great reason for this:

Mulan is not a very complex character, but she is a very likeable protagonist and we can relate a lot with her.

A brick feature of Disney Princesses is about being girls not liking her normal environment and wanting more. However, Mulan breaks this part. She doesn’t really hate her role in her society, and she even wants to follow the status quo given to women, the only problem is that she is not really good at it, and she take too seriously the comment of other people, especially the negative aspects. Also, she doesn’t contrast with her family: she loves her parents and grandma, and she is very concerned in making them proud; ah, Asian Stereotypes! We can see this with her choice of joining the Army:

Even if her main goal was to save his father from parole, she indirectly took that decision in order to find an alternative way to bring honor to the family she feels she “disappointed”, and also to gain more respect to herself. Seeing this, Mulan has a serious issue of self-esteem, and, like I have said, she let other people to declare either if she is a good person or not, a fact highly established by the song “Reflection”. It’s like a Shinki Ikari, but with more testosterone XD

During the story, Mulan looks for the approval of others, but she also learns that she can’t always do good by forever following the laws, rules, and even orders, from other people. Even with chances to give up or retry her Female Roles, she never quits in order to do the right thing, and that’s something admirable.

Also, Mulan is so memorable for two characteristics: bringing a lot of fanservice, and having the highest body-count for a Disney Character. Yes, like I have said, Mulan brought us many sex jokes and gives us a lot of Ecchi Moments. Also, Mulan is highly remembered for having killed almost an entire army with an avalanche. Man, and she is a Disney Hero.

However, another great aspect of Mulan is that, in my opinion, she is an amazing role model for girls in general, and a great aid for Feminism. “Mulan” can count as a “Girl Power” film, but not because she panders to radical feminists, but because it brings great morals for any kind of people, and uses amazingly a female characters.

Mulan helps in breaking stereotypes by trying to fulfill a role designated to men during her time, and not following the normal status for women back then. However, she keeps herself from becoming a Mary Sue by showing her struggle in this: she has a bad physical condition, she is bullied by her mates, she sucks at the training, and she would be pretty much dead in real combat. It doesn’t sound to Feminist, but it is if we se the complete version.

Mulan isn’t good at the Army for being a woman, but because she doesn’t have any experience whatsoever related to it: we never saw her fight, use a bow, fishing, using rockets, a swords, or even being that social with men outside her family. She managed to become into a great warrior, but because she put a lot of effort and wisdom to become better. In other words: she broke her ass to overcome her limits. And that’s a great message: a woman can do the same as a man, but that doesn’t mean training, learning and previous experience aren’t necessary, and don’t expect special treatment. Mulan managed to become into the greatest hero from China not for having a vagina, but because prepared her body, mind and personality for it, and got a lot of aid. Now that’s good Feminism.

However, a question still stands: why is she a Disney Princess? Or even better, why is she even the BEST Disney Princess?

For this decision, Disney decided to make a rule for the Disney Princesses: if a female protagonist did a great act of heroism, she can get into the franchise. It’s sounds like bullshit, and I admit it is, however, this characters deserves this honor: she is likeable, brave, strong, a good role model, and brings a great message to people. Maybe we can’t consider her 100% a Princess, but, if she was, she would be the best. I don’t underrate other great examples like Ariel, Jasmine, Belle or Tiana, but Mulan still triumphs with everything she has done.

Therefore, with all this, I decided to bring honor to Fa Mulan and draw her as a Toy Girl.

For this work, I decided to dress Mulan in the outfit she normally wears in merchandise. It was very memorable and good looking.

For the scene, seeing what a great warrior and hero she became, I put her holding her sword stuck in the floor. And, yes, I decided to draw the weapon with all the details. To make Mulan prettier, I drew her without lipstick: she looks way better like this.

This has been one of the work that made me more anxious. I enjoyed so much this experience, only because this character is so great. “Mulan” is a film that people must keep watching once in a while, and Mulan is a timless character, and a great symbol of how a woman can achieve success in a world where girls are belittled. You don’t have to get the role of the victimizer, being an asshole, or think you are superior. You only have to do the right thing, break outdated standards, and aid the people around. I hope other feminists don’t look up anymore characters like Misty, Misae Nohara, or Olivia Armstrong, but instead characters like Garnet, Elsa, Star Butterfly, Twilight Sparkle or, you know, Mulan, because “It’s time for beauty now”.

Whoa! And I mean “Whoa!”. I totally went overboard with this, but it was all worth it. Well, guys, it’s everything for today: see you next time. Speaking of that: what is waiting for us this July? Actually, for next month, we are having also a great example of a Good Heroine, and one of my favorite female characters, and of so many too. God, her animated series is not a simple cartoon anymore: it’s a whole legend in its genre. Hell, it even reinvented its own genre. So, because next time we are having an amazing girl as a guest, you better don’t miss it, or else, in the name of the Moon, I’ll punish you.
