Toy Girls - As n Crfs Series 69: Princess Unikitty

    And we come to the close of the weekend. I’m mickeyelric11, the Master of Cuteness, and this is another work for Toy Girls’ Arts & Crafts Series.     The Princess concept is a giant brick for Girlhood. It’s as important and as iconic as the color Pink, Dresses and Cats. It’s been a popular critic that little girls dream and fantasize more about being the daughter of a king instead of being a Queen with all the authority possible. There are many factors, like Doug Walker himself said, about this happening: the industry promotes girls an image of power, but not really of responsibility, while also highlighting more youth and beauty than power. However, with this came along a little antithesis in media: we got many Female Monarchs without anyone bigger over them, with the total control of a nation or land, but still keeping the title of “Princess” instead of “Queen” or “Empress”. The examples are thousand, and here we’re going to check out a more modern one, which came along with this adorable character. For this Sunday:

    Hey, guys! Have you ever watched “The Lego Movie”? I only saw the first part, to be honest. But still, it was a giant thing: it didn’t only offer a fresh media for Filmmaking, but it managed to be more than a 90 minutes Toy Commercial with a story that satisfied many audiences. One of the most iconic features, aside of the animation, was the use of as much of original characters as of one from franchises bought by LEGO. Therefore, we could see The Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles, Superman, characters from “Lord of the Rings”, and even Batman (who will even get his own Lego Movie) interacting with the characters made for the movie. However, nobody thought that someone would make a movie using one of the original characters made for the film, but maybe because nobody ever fucking thought which characters was going to be picked to have a TV Show: Unikitty!

    Once you see this better, you find no rhyme or reason: she was not a main character, she appeared briefly in the film, and she didn’t even have a toy line before the flick. Who knows? Maybe people loved her so much that they needed to see more of her adventures in a TV Series.

    OK, now that we got a TV Show featuring this character, how is it? I just watched a couple of episodes, they are OK, so so, BUT I FREAKING LOVE PRINCESS UNIKITTY!

    First, I want to point out how this character is an obvious blend of all what little girls love: she is a princess, she is pink, she is part unicorn, and even she is a motherfucking cat. I don’t hate this, but I can’t help but to notice this obvious pandering to little girls. However, Princess Unikitty happens to be a very likeable character.

    I have to say that she remembers me so much of Star Butterfly, another character that I love. Aside of she being a princess, she shares her same upbeat attitude and joy. She is always with a smile on her face, and wants to make everyone else happy. Now with this, I can even see a little influence from Pinkie Pie, even to the color.

    However, by far, the thing I love more about Unikitty is she being a Big Sister, but not only that. She doesn’t only have a puppy unicorn as a little brother, but they are amazing siblings. They play together, love one another with a big passion, and share a great friendship. It’s just a joy to see these two together.

    Therefore, I was more than glad to draw Princess Unikitty as a Toy Girl, especially for my amazing friend Ross.

    This was one of my most challenging humanization of a character, just after Blue from “Blue’s Clues”. I only had a brick cat with a horn to work with, so, I put at my best my imagination.

    For the outfit, I looked in Google for samples of anime princesses, so I could get an idea for the clothing. Of course it had to be a dress, but I still needed to find the shape. I drew a pink blouse to represent Unikitty’s body, and I modeled the skirt after her tail. Seeing the paws, I gave Unikitty a pair of blue long gloves, long white socks, and yellow shoes; I loved so much this last feature.

    To translate the iconic horn, I decided to transform it into a tiara, with the hown drawn as a triangle-shaped blue gem. It looks so amazing.

    For the hair, I not only colored pink, but I drew Unikitty’s head in the shape of pigtails, with triangle-shaped hair ties.

    For the pose, seeing she reminds me of Star Butterfly, I looked for the sample of star skipping with the arms on the air, and so I drew Unikitty like her.

    What do I think of the Princess trend? It’s cool. I mean, kids love to still play to over romanticized jobs like cowboys or astronauts, modern TV Shows promote things like adventurers like a fine thing for kids, so I don’t see any problem with girls wanting to be princesses. It has a unique charm girls happen to like, and that’s cool. The entire contrary, I would like to see more of this trend, because “Cuteness shall last”.
