Violet and Dash - Looking for Comfort, Dig Remake

Description

OH MY GOD!!! I say this even being an Atheist myself. This is definitely the biggest and hardest work I have ever made for deviantART, honor that had my illustration of Molly and Humphrey – Christmas at Central Park since December 2013. I was even thinking on making this kind of project for this summer. But, let’s stop digressing, and let’s start explain.

So here I am, mickeyelric11, bringing you another Ilustration, following this new series of Summer 2014. Like I think I said before, this summer I propose myself to make as much works I could to rest of school. Even before the last day, I made a list of the works I wanted to make for this holiday. So, the first one was Helen Lorraine. The Best Owner Ever and the second would have been other incorporation to my series “Dark meets Light”, “Molly and Humphrey” or “Big Sister + Little Brother”…but then Everything Changed When The Fire Nation Attacked! XD XD XD XD OK, that didn’t happen, but something did change my entire schedule:

This summer I rediscovered PIXAR’s The Incredibles, a movie I remember I beg a lot to my parents to see in the movies: I think it was the first PIXAR movie I watched in theaters. I remember liking the movie a lot. However, what most stuck with me was Violet Parr. In those years, I remember having an enormous crush on her. She was so pretty and hot (for those douchebags that want to bring pedo bulshit, KEYWORDS, I was 12 years old when the movie premiered). So, it was kind of disappointing that the movie focused on Mr. Incredible most of the time, while what I only wanted was to see her. The years passed and I pretty much forgot the movie.

Then, after nearly 10 years from all that, I rediscovered this movie, and I found something else to love about it: the fact of Violet being a Big Sister. Like I said before, one of the things I love the most in fiction are the Big-Sister-and-Little-Brother Relationships, they’re just so cute and charming, so: female characters become more interesting when they have a Little Brother, while I find more fascinating to the male characters when they have a Big Sister. So, along with Brave, The Incredibles was the only PIXAR movie where I could find a BSaLB Relationship,

In this movie, however, there are some issues I get with the BSaLB Relationship of Violet and Dash:

    1.      Like the Nostalgia Critic said himself, this movie should be called Mr. Incredible, because, in comparison, we got little time to see Violet and Dash, what really disappoint me the first time I see the film.

    2.      Sadly, Violet and Dash Relationship is more Sibling Rivalry than anything. It’s realistic, I know, but with this relationship I rather see the siblings being nice to one another and no fight so much.

However, there were still moments when they interact with one another and we see a really honest moment where Dash says how much he cares for his sister. But I digress, let’s talk now about the real even behind this:

So, after rediscovering this film, and discovering this relationship, I started to look for illustrations featuring Dash and Violet here in deviantART. I have to say I found plenty of works of them that I liked a lot, and I even fave. Great hand-made colored drawings, beautiful digital illustrations, and even really charming sketches. However, on this third group is where I found the work that fascinated me the most, not only for its quality as a sketch, but for all the charm it irradiated with its theme: Looking for Comfort (eternallyoptimistic.deviantart…), created by the great artist EternallyOptimistic (eternallyoptimistic.deviantart…), AKA, Brittany Brode.

It’s about a pencil sketch representing a scene from a former fanfic called Sibling Comfort, sadly offline nowadays. Here, we can see Violet letting a scared Dash sleep with her. While Dash hugs her sister with force, Violet strokes so gently and with much love her brother’s head.

What really touches me is not the fact of only putting a Big Sister and a Little Brother, because I would have despised this work if they were fighting for the blankets or kicking one another. It’s how the great author manages the Sibling Love, giving us a so complex message in a simple drawing, a great goal for an artist.

Yes, they fight when they run out of patience. Yes, Violet gets bossy with Dash. Yes, Dash can start the problem making fun of Violet. YES, it’s normal that siblings do this; Mary Sue Relationships don’t exist here. However, it’s also normal that siblings act nice with one another, and not flinching in showing how much care and love they have for his/her sibling.

In this work, I fell in love with the concept of this scene. Dash, even being a Superhuman with Super Speed with a reckless and naughty attitude, he’s still a 10 years old kid. He can get scare and need a hug to feel protected. Also, Violet seems to get so much annoyed by his little brother, so she rather to treat him in a tough manner so he, and also she, won’t get in troubles; considering that she won’t hesitate  in beat Dash up if he pisses her off. However, she can’t help but to feel that 2°-Mother Instinct that Big Sisters use to have. This doesn’t mean that they only nag all the time, but they realize when their little sibling is having a problem, and act like a guardian for him/her, seeing the great cuteness on them.

I just couldn’t take this image out of my mind: I always visited the link and admire the work every day of this summer. So, one day I decided to take the next step: I contacted to Brittany (EternallyOptimistic) and asked her for permission to remake this image as a Digital Ilustration. She said YES…and I couldn’t be happier. I postponed my other works and I decided to focus on making this one.

For my works to deviantART, I have created my own Foldered Protocol to organize the making, ease the process and prevent artistic blocks, unfixable mistakes, and make a good final design. On them, I write the project itself, put the sketches in it, my proposals and images of reference. However, this time I try to follow the PIXAR way: get a ton of references, organize my work schedule, and make more complex the sketches, and boy…it took a total of 30 PAPER SHEETS. I wrote all the steps, all what I wanted to put in this work, I took photos to design the background and the characters, I made complete sketches by pencil and ink of both characters, getting the right size, scale, proportions and poses using a lot of cannon and fanon images to do so.

In this work, I didn’t want to redraw the exact same scene from the original sketch. It’s a great work, but it was simple in elements, just having the Parr Siblings and a portion of the bed. Maybe it was enough to make me love it, but if I was going to remake it, I think it was better to make it bigger and more detailed, and, in consequence, funnier.

Talking about the PIXAR way, I used in this work a tradition that PIXAR does in its films. I don’t want to give it away right now, so I don’t look so obvious and desperate. So I would let you guess. But, I can say it took most of the time I employed to make this illustration.

After seeing this work complete, I just can’t be more satisfied. It’s so beautiful; it has the same charm I loved from the original sketch. I like how complex I could make this work, creating a giant contrast with the Original Sketch that makes you say “WHOAAAA!!!”. Maybe I will publish the PNG’s of the elements I used, I may upload the sketches, or even Hell, I can put all my Protocol like a Digital Book.

Thanks a lot, Brittany Brode, for letting me remake your work. You have to be proud of yourself: one of the greatest things an artist can do is to inspire others to make more art based on yours. Thanks for being a great friend! A big hug from Mexico! By the way, your video recording your friend watching Digimon 02 Epilogue was really fun to watch.

I hope you like this work. Thanks for your views, and I would love to read your comments! I can’t wait for the sequel of The Incredibles!

For all the Big Sisters and their Little Brothers, and also for the other kind of siblings that I respect:

“You can’t choose your sibling, but you can choose to be a good one”.

I don’t own The Incredibles. PIXAR and Brad Bird does.

Work based on the great Sketch of Brittany Brode “Looking for Comfort”. Check her gallery, especially if you love PIXAR and Digimon 02.
