Description

:D I know it’s a little thing, but what the Heck: I have just purchased “Pokémon: HeartGold”. I have been playing with it since yesterday, and I have already two badges. But I digress: I’m mickleyelric11 and this is another work for The Shelf Series of Toy Girls. Let’s get this started!

There’s plenty of reason why a TV show is bad: it has hateable characters, a boring story, a terrible premise, horrible morals, or it just not funny. However, something interesting to notice is that, when a TV Series used bad the premise, it doesn’t necessarily means that it can’t be done right in another situation. All the contrary: the magic of a premise is in the execution and the angle given to it. This is the case of this show, which gave us this great character. For this day Friday

    Peg, from “Peg + Cat”.

Like you all already know, I guess: I FUCKING HATE “DORA THE EXPLORER”. I loathe its premise, its EXECUTION, its characters, its design, and its undeserved success. However, I would like to point specifically the Execution.

In my opinion, what makes this show really annoying, aside of its Mary Sue Main Character, is the Gimmick of having Dora, a really bland and flawless (in the bad way), talking to the audience and making stupid questions during the whole story; and even repeating explanations over and over.

However, we can’t forget that what Dora did in her show was nothing new. Breaking the 4° Wall is a really old trick, and asking directly to the audience to solve a problem in the story is a gimmick we could see in a previous show like “Blue’s Clues”. Also, what really killed this was having a so obnoxious character as the main lead, having really easy, to insulting levels, problems, and also making this trick slow the story; also, it really didn’t help that the show really tried to act as if there was a genuine interaction between the already made TV Show and the kids.

So, years later I found this show in Discovery Kids, and I realized something really interesting: “Peg + Cat” is “Dora the Explorer” done right. No, I don’t mean that this cartoon is a rip-off of that piece of shit, but another show who used the Breaking of the 4° Wall and the Goal of Teaching Kids in a smarter way; this show is even my Number 9 Favorite Preschool Show in my TOP 10.

Even if the main character still talks to the audience, this is not to keep asking every 2 minutes to solve a really stupid and corny problem, but instead to make the story go, while also presenting the world and the situation of the story in a better way; in other words, the Original Intention of Breaking the 4° Wall.

So, instead of making this show too easy and boring, because it thinks that its audience is stupid as a brick, it focuses more in telling charming stories with a  really nice story, while trying to solve the problems by its characters’ actions. Also, the songs are way better and the characters much, much interesting.

So, what about Peg? Is she a better Dora or just a expy?

Well, to be honest: I love this character a lot. She is way better than that idiot of Dora. Yes, she is still a main character not that complex, but she is an Evangelion Character compared to that stupid girl.

What really makes Peg shine more than Dora is, first, for not being a Mary Sue. Even if her personality isn’t really that tridimensional, she gets way more interesting for trying to solve the problems around her, and seeing how much she struggles while facing them. Also, she is pretty funny, especially with her running gag of “We have a really Big PROBLEM!”, seeing how anxious and nervous she can get.

So, seeing that this girl came from a really better show than my arch nemesis, I’m so happy to draw Peg as a Toy Girl.

Aside of her normal outfit, I also drew her playing her ukulele, because it’s a pretty big part of her identity; she plays it in the intro and every time she solves a problem.

The hair was kind of hard to draw, because, at first, I really couldn’t make it look like the original one, because the look was almost completely based in the red lines it had.

In other note, I can’t help but to notice how similar is Peg to Molly: a similar hir and even the same skin tone. Mayte is just a coincidence.

While sadly there are plenty of stupid Preschool Shows that really hurt their kind by trying to be the living stereotype of Preschool TV Series, I’m glad when other ones pop out trying to be really good products, even by doing the premises of the formers way better. I hope I can see more TV Series like them, because “Cuteness shall last”.
