Toy Girls - Shelf Series 35: Madeline

Description

Last Friday of Summer Holidays…at least for me. College starts next Monday, but luckily it would be Afternoon Classes: no more early awakenings for me. But, there will be still more Toy Girls, especially for The Shelf Series. So, let’s finish this!

Literature is a great fiction media, however, it’s really limited. So, something normal it’s to adapt Literature Works into a graphic media: comic, TV Shows or, most commonly, films. This can really generate a giant franchise that lasts for ages. In this case I’m going to talk about a TV Animated Series based on this really famous French Novels, which brought us this really sweet character. For this last Friday of freedom:

    Madeline, from The “Madeline” Franchise.

When I was a kid, and we finally got Disney Channel, I used to watch a lot Playhouse Disney, especially because Nick Jr. had that piece of shit of Dora the Explorer, and one of the Preschool Shows I used to watch a lot was Madeline.

I really don’t remember so much about this, but it was an OK show: really cute, tame, and with a really enjoyable main character.

…Well…let’s talk about that main character.

One thing I remember a lot about Madeline, aside from confusing her a lot with Matilda and Mafalda (what a really similar names!)., is how nice she was. Well, what’s so fantastic about that? Well, I say this because, oddly enough, a lot of cartoons from my time were really big fans of wanting to make “strong girls”, but most of the times they got bully girls; which Japanese call like “Tsundere”. Yes, think about it: plenty of the girl characters, especially with a boy like a partner, were most of the time portrayed as the boldest, the cockiest, the ones to smack the boys most of the time, but sadly plenty of them were Bully Mary Sues.

However, in the case of Madeline, she wasn’t only nice, but she was really naughty and she got in a lot of troubles, to the dismay of Miss Clavel.

Also, like plenty of other kids, most of us considered Madeline like an orphan, the school as an orphanage, and Miss Clavel as a Church Sister (blame the Live-Action Film for that), while in the original novel, she had still parents, the place was a Boarding School, a Catholic Boarding School, and Miss Clavel was a kind of nurse: that’s why they never called her Sister Clavel.

But, while I was thinking for a really cute girl to transform into a Toy Girl, Madeline was of course an option. Why did I put her in The Shelf Series instead of the Arts & Crafts if I’m taking some elements from other Medias outside the cartoon? Because, when I drew this work like months ago, the Arts & Crafts Series didn’t exist yet.

When I was thinking for a pose of her, I pictured her with her arm extended and letting go rose petals in the wind. I consider it a really feminine occasion and I love so much how it looks.

In the original cartoon, her School Uniform was a complete yellow outfit. However, I really liked more her blue uniform, so I decided to us it instead.

This is one of the works I adore the most. I consider it extremely cute and feminine. I hope you like this work as much as I do. Maybe school starts again this Monday (my last semester :,( ), but I will play the French Anthem and see the positive angl, because “Cuteness shall last”.
