Description

Greeting, everyone, here I am again, mickyelric11, brining you finally a different from Toy Girls, because this is actually my Number 100 Work for deviantART, and I had to celebrate it. So, I touched again one of my favorite teams, the Big Sister and Little Brother Relationships, this time finally picking one of the series I wanted the most to make a fanfart of.

Let’s talk about The Replacements.

This is one of the Disney series sadly it’s almost forgotten nowadays, but the saddest part is that this cartoon isn’t free of any guilt.

I think I was starting Middle School, the worst phase of my lie, when this show first came out. Even with only its trailers, I was really excited to watch it, the main reason was because this show hooked me completely with just a single element: THE CHARACTER DESIGN. The Replacement’s Drawing Style, in my opinion, is one of the best Cartoon Designs of all time: bright colors, simple silhouettes, likeable faces, and all helped with a good animation. So, when I finally watched the series premiered, there were a lot of deceptions: corny intro with a bland song, not-that-developed characters with so cliché personalities, and changing slowly from a series with a heart into the classic formula of parodying morals (pretty much what you see in Spongebob and the Fairly OddParents nowadays.). Also, the main premise didn’t help: that thing of these two kids having phones from this company that helped them to replace a person, only for this to backfire, it’s so identical to the formula of others shows like The Fairly OddParents or Doraemon; and it doesn’t help that the show pretty much got bored of this formula and almost forgot it.

However, the show still got, apart from the so likeable design, funny characters, specially Riley Daring, my favorite, Dick Daring, Agent K, some funny episodes, a world interestingly built, and so great and so deep elements that this show could have used better, like the fact of these two kids being orphan, having an Own-All Company as Fleemco, etc.

Bu then, the show pretty much died…and turned into a zombie. First, let’s murder the greatest element for changing that so memorable, nice to look at, and even beautiful design, for a disgusting drawing style, with redish colors and less details, making the characters’ eyes hard to look at, then let’s not teach morals anymore, turn the characters into assholes, and instead of turning the series into a more serious one, let’s make it blander and more vulgar.

Nothing is sadder than wasted potential. Here, Disney got the chance of having its own Hey Arnold!, and pretty much was ungrateful everything good this show was able to achieve, and made it into one of the most forgettable series ever.

But well, I still had some heart for the First Season, and all the ideas of “what it could have been…”. After rediscover it, I did not only find again that beautiful design I once loved, but I also discovered something that I like so much nowadays: Riley and Todd Daring.

Like you all know, I love so much BSaLBR, and this was actually Number 9 in my TOP 10 My Favorite Big Sisters and Little Brothers. One of my biggest disappointments in this BSaLBR is the fact of how cliché are these characters, Riley being so nagging and Todd so troublemaker. Even if this sis normal with this kind of Relationship, it doesn’t make any sense, considering that these two are former orphans, you know, two siblings without any parents or close relatives, and they only had one another during the time of the Orphanage. Why would they be bickering so much if not so long ago they didn’t any loved person, and they were only to a single sibling of being left alone in the whole world? Their relationship should be stronger that the one Edward and Alphonse Elric share. And what’s even more stupid is the fact of the show never playing with this stuff. Some people would say it’s because they forgot that fact, but, HOW CAN THEY DO THAT WHEN IT’S REPEATED EVERYTIME IN THE INTOR, THE FIRST PART OF THE SERIES???!!! Being portrayed as normal siblings when they weren’t, you know, because that would be interesting, even charming.

But still they got some funny traits, like Riley being so girly and having a great love for sugar, while Todd…well…he was the one who normally brought the troubles to the story. So, after my TOP 10, I really wanted to finally put them into a fanart, I only needed to find the best opportunity, and the best inspiration. So, this winter I realized I had both.

Time ago I found a fanfic about these two in fanfiction.net, and I don’t want to say which is because it plays with a theme that many people sadly has a extreme taboo to it, and I don’t want  idiots coming here to say bullshit about this work only for their childish thoughts and prejudices. But, I just couldn’t help but to love it, because, at difference of the show, made by “professionals”, it played with the facts of these two being former orphan siblings, creating a so great story thanks to its great writing, compared to commercial books, with good descriptions and narrative, but I also loved it for describing the characters feeling, the motivations and looking to an issue in many angles…you know, what a good fictional work should do. I remember I had a time when I used to reread this fanfic every Friday and Saturday night, while listening to sad music to fit the environment. It was a jewel and, even if it looked like a normal fanfic people never finish, it ended in a great chapter.

So, I liked it so much that I really wanted to turn it into a comic to publish here in deviantART, but, there were a couple of troubles:

    1.      I couldn’t contact to the original author, so I didn’t feel like correct to make this protect without his/her permission, even if I credit him/her.

    2.      A complete comic of the three chapters of this fanfic would be a titanic project; it’s enough problems just a single page.

    3.      Like I said before, it touches a really “taboo” theme, don’t worry, it’s not pedophilia, rape, domestic abuse, or any theme that people use to make movies of to make a Oscar-deserving drama (and no, this fanfic didn’t use that theme in a Explotation way, but into a serious one), and so I will attract plenty of motherfuckers Nazis to “destroy” the work with their childish comments. Si, I see this project like worthless.

However, I finally got an idea that could save me from many of these stuffs: draw one of the scenes I liked the most, and people that never read the fanfic can still identify it and appreciate it.

So, the quick summary:

“One day, Donny Rottweiler made fun of Riley in front of many students that joint into the mocking, and so she went crying to the bathroom. However, Donny didn’t count with Todd surprisingly attacking him and beating the crap out of him. Then Todd gets suspended from school. When he arrives to his house with his pissed off mother, he ran to his room to be left alone.

However, once Todd is in his room, Riley surprises him and invites him to go outside his window, to the roof, so they can watch the stars together. Riley tells her that, even if she doesn’t excuses violence, she still thanks him for standing up to Donny. So, she kisses him on the check like a reward”

In my opinion it’s a beautiful story, and, if the author discovers this work, I would like to thank him, and I will give him/her a written credit if he/she wants to.

So, I just needed to draw this scene, incorporating all the charm that fanfic gave me.

So, the first step was to practice the original characters design of this, once again, its strongest feature, like a tribute to the few things this show made so good. For this, I first wanted to get the mathematical proportions of the original design, but, because that would be impossible, I decided to grab some paper sheets and try to copy some screen shots from the episodes, and I quickly got, and in the process I could discover some tricks to make this design. However, this will come with a great problem.

Because of its cartooning style, a little far from real-life proportions, I got a lot of problem to draw them in the final pose because I wanted to draw this scene in angle, and something really hard for me it’s to draw in perspective. But then, I remember the Pixar Law of always doing research and having real life samples to make your works, including making clay models. So, that was my solutions. I grabbed some plasticine and built figures of both Todd and Riley, and I bended them and put them into the poses I wanted to draw, I grabbed my camera and took a lot of photos to get the angle I wanted, that fitted in the scene in perspective I have drawn. It helped a lot, especially with the arms and legs, just some problem making the heads, in a way they didn’t look compressed or one didn’t cover the other behind. I will post the photo after this work so you can see the clay figures that my family liked a lot.

Talking about the scene, when thinking it out, I made it in angle so I could have the roof on the right foreground and a landscape in the background, where I will put a big and bright moon, which I will use as a point of reference for the perspective, and also for the illumination I added later.

While digitalizing it, I didn0’t have so much troubles to get the original show design, only few times when making the pressured strokes, but most of the time was easy.  I tried to apply the style in every element possible, since the characters, to the roof, and even to the moon. However, I still added some different features, like the blushing of the characters, that I loved a lot, and the shading, that I also used in my past Christmas Work.

Also, because it was my 100° work, I hid Three Easter Eggs related to my works in the scene, can you find them? Also, I put my logo on a corner.

Since I made toy girls, I was afraid of the fact of never doing a different work again, as the ones I made before, because they normally are harder to make, because I need to get the original design, I need to find samples, I need to learn to draw them, and the digital illustration is more complex than in Toy Girls. However, with this work I wasn0t afraid of that anymore, because it remembered me that there will be always a theme that will inspire me so much that it will make me to put all my effort to make a new deviation. Maybe toy girls will help me to not have any more inactivity moments here in dA, but I will still publish different works.

So, I’m happy I finally achieved 100 works here; finally I’m in three digits. I hope you liked this work, and, if you do, please leave a comment telling me what you think. So, see you, everyone!

The Replacements is owned by Disney

This scene was inspired by a great fanfic. I will say the author username if he/she someday find this work. Thanks a lot, friend!
